The extension of the US–China export-control truce announced in connection with the September 2026 summit

I predict a 36% likelihood that no qualifying export-control truce extension will be announced around the September 2026 summit, driven primarily by a persistent negotiating impasse over duration that the November deadline allows both sides to defer bridging.

These questions concern the Xi–Trump summit scheduled for September 24, 2026.

Qualifying announcements must be made between question publication and 11:59 p.m. Washington, DC time on September 30, 2026, and explicitly connected to the summit or its preparatory negotiations. Implementation may occur later.

Use official statements, published agreements and regulatory documents. For commercial commitments, announcements by participating companies also qualify. An official statement by either government identifying an agreed bilateral outcome qualifies unless the other government explicitly contradicts it by the deadline.

If the summit does not take place by September 30, these questions are annulled.

A qualifying extension must cover both the US suspension of the Affiliates Rule and China’s suspension of its October 9, 2025 export-control package.

Measure additional time beyond each suspension’s existing scheduled expiry, rather than from the summit date. If the two extensions have different specified durations, use the shorter. If either duration is unspecified, select “duration unspecified.”

Permanent withdrawal of both sets of suspended measures counts as open-ended. An extension of only one side’s suspension does not qualify as a bilateral extension.
