I predict a 55% likelihood that the September 2026 US-China summit produces an agreement specifying reciprocal tariff reductions, as technical momentum surrounding a concrete $30 billion package is heavily counterbalanced by the historical precedent of summits defaulting to vague framework language rather than explicit product-level cuts.

Question context

Resolution criteria

These questions concern the Xi–Trump summit scheduled for September 24, 2026.

Qualifying announcements must be made between question publication and 11:59 p.m. Washington, DC time on September 30, 2026, and explicitly connected to the summit or its preparatory negotiations. Implementation may occur later.

Use official statements, published agreements and regulatory documents. For commercial commitments, announcements by participating companies also qualify. An official statement by either government identifying an agreed bilateral outcome qualifies unless the other government explicitly contradicts it by the deadline.

If the summit does not take place by September 30, these questions are annulled.

This question resolves Yes if a summit-related agreement publicly specifies both of the following for imports in both countries:

  • The goods or product categories covered.
  • The reduced tariff rates, or the amount of the reductions.

The agreement must reduce tariffs below the rates applicable when the questions were published. Merely extending an existing suspension, reaffirming the previously announced framework, or promising further negotiations does not qualify.

Broad product categories are sufficient; a complete list of customs codes is not required. The package need not cover exactly $30 billion of goods on each side. An effective date is not required.
